How Can You Get the Most Out of Your Heater This Winter?

You do not have to completely cut back on how much you use your heater in order to save energy and subsequent money. Besides, cold weather in our area is serious, and a reliable heating system that you can use on a daily basis is essential.

Still, though, we understand that with how much you run your Boise, ID heating system, you want to use it as efficiently as possible and cut down on those heating bills. Prudent homeowners can certainly find ways to improve their energy efficiency and lower their monthly bills in the meantime. For instance, you could set your thermostat a few degrees lower than normal and wear warmer clothes indoors. Below are some more great tips to help you get the most out of your heater this winter.

Utilize a Programmable Thermostat

Most homes today have a programmable thermostat connected to their HVAC system. But even some homeowners who have this type of thermostat don’t use it to its full ability, because they believe they can save money by either leaving it off all day when they’re not home or running the heat at the same temperature all day (even when nobody is there).

The opposite is true though—these are both ways to waste money. Rather, you should set your thermostat to lower than 65°F when nobody is home, and have it programmed to raise the heat about twenty minutes before the first person comes home for the day. This way your home will be nice and warm the moment you arrive, but you won’t have wasted valuable energy all day.

If you want to take this one step further, you might consider investing in a “smart thermostat.” These thermostats learn your heating and cooling patterns in addition to local weather conditions to make adjustments on their own that can shave dollars off of your energy bills.

Correct Drafts

Cracks around your doors and windows can cause heated air to escape out of your home in the winter, and of course can let cool air out in the summer, too. Weather stripping is one easy solution to this problem. This can be purchased at any hardware store and applied pretty easily by following the instructions. You may be surprised by how much this can improve your home’s ability to retain conditioned air.

Have Your Heater Maintained Regularly

Heating repairs can be costly, and are never convenient. But in many cases, the biggest of heating repairs can actually be avoided by scheduling maintenance on a regular basis. Routine maintenance allows our technicians to thoroughly inspect, clean, and adjust your system. We also check for apparent or pending repair needs, and alert you to them right away so you can schedule those repairs.

This helps to avoid a much costlier emergency later on down the line. Maintenance should be scheduled at least once a year, or twice a year if you have a heat pump system. This service will give you the peace of mind that your heating system has been comprehensively checked. It also helps heating efficiency and extends the lifespan of the unit as a result.
