Tips for Using Your AC System Most Efficiently

HVAC return air ventIn yesterday’s post, we talked a little bit about the factors that go into determining the cost of your new air conditioner. One of the biggest considerations you’ll want to make when purchasing a new system is what your monthly costs will be, since lower cooling bills can certainly help offset the initial cost of your AC unit.

Of course, you can buy the most efficient cooling system you can get does help. But if you don’t use that system as efficiently as possible, then you may up spending much more than you should have just to run your air conditioner. Without further ado, here are some tips to help you use your Boise AC system most efficiently.

Schedule Preventive Maintenance

Preventive maintenance is called such for a reason. It helps fend off the largest of AC repair needs, helps your air conditioner last longer, and perhaps most importantly, it helps your system operate more efficiently.

During maintenance, our team will thoroughly inspect the system, comprehensively clean it, and make any adjustments they deem necessary. For a standard cooling system, maintenance should be scheduled once a year (preferably in the fall before its biggest period of use). If you’re using a year-round heat pump system, however, this service should be done once every six months.

Change Your Air Filter!

Many homeowners believe that the purpose of the air filter that comes standard with their air conditioner is in place to protect their indoor air quality. It’s intended purpose is actually to protect the inside components of your air conditioner from dirt and debris.

When the air filter becomes too clogged, not only can that debris infiltrate components of your air conditioner, but it will also restrict airflow. When airflow is blocked, your air conditioner has to work much harder than it should have to in order to do its job—therefore operating inefficiently.

Use a Programmable Thermostat

If you’ve upgraded your air conditioner but have yet to replace your old manual slider thermostat, then you are doing yourself a disservice. You may be surprised by how much just a few degrees can affect how efficiently your system operates. And those older thermostats are likely off by at least a few.
